Course Description:
Integrating Craniosacral Biodynamics and Structural Integration
Structural Integration has deep roots in Osteopathy. Dr. Rolf studied with the developer of the cranial concept, Dr. William Sutherland, DO, and his colleagues, who discovered the body is a fluid whole with no subdivisions. He showed that cranial touch is not a stand alone therapy, but can be integrated into interactions with the entire body.
You will learn cranial touch for the entire body. Science tells us that 70% of the adult body is fluid. Traditionally, we have learned to relate to the anatomy, the other 30% of the body. Fluids carry self ordering, self healing information from conception throughout life. This information is felt as Inherent Motion (movements of life). These movements are expressions of Wholeness.
Synchronizing with these expressions can reorganize the whole body. Fluids cannot be pushed around. To perceive these ordering movements one must shift from "doing" hands to "listening" hands.
Inherent Motion is present, as an organizing force, in the embryo and throughout life. You will learn how to discern and synchronize with its rhythms, flows, and pauses in order to augment this organization potential.
The solid body (anatomy) and fascia are immersed in the fluid extracellular matrix. Instead of only using 'doing hands" for myofascial manipulation, you will learn many more possibilities for interacting with the entire fluidic fascial network.
As Structural Integrators, we learn to use our hands for doing. Our hands can also perceive Inherent Motion (IM). Perceiving IM requires shifting your frame of mind to receiving and listening hands. This allows you to experience broader tensional patterns, that may be invisible to your eye. You will develop a more comprehensive perception of fascia, encompassing more than myofascia alone. As you practice the presence and contact skills learned in class, you will improve the effectiveness of your doing hands, while at the same time developing your listening hands. Your hands will become more sensitive. You will get more done with less effort.

This class is the introduction to a 7 module training. The content of this beginning Module teaches the fundamentals for every Module that follows. Much of this training will be oriented toward exploring the felt sense of “presence” and how presence can expand your perceptions. We will practice presence in ourselves and in relationship throughout the training.
Not only are these skills necessary to perceive Inherent Motion, but they also help to balance the autonomic nervous system.
This is a principles based training. Every time you touch, you will be practicing the three principles, developing a keener understanding of the relationship of the whole body with the cranium and how to enhance the goals of the 10 series.
After my craniosacral trainings, I found it difficult to integrate this new perspective into my SI practice. I was either doing a cranial session or an SI session. In my 38 years working as a Structural Integrator, I have found that the simple principles of this BioDynamic training work well with all we have learned about helping bodies to reorganize, rebound from trauma, and become more balanced overall. It has taken years to Integrate this quality of touch into my SI practice and I look forward to sharing this fascinating process with you.

Thomas has been a Structural Integration practitioner for 38 years and has practiced craniosacral therapy and Biodynamics for 30 years. He was on the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute faculty for 18 years and has conducted this training in both United States and Europe.
