Course Title: Manual Neurovascular Release (NVR) Part 1: Neck, “Roots of Arms,” and Upper Thorax

Course Date: August 30 - September 1, 2024

Course Instructor: Kieran Schumaker

Kieran Schumaker (Kier, they/them) is a Board Certified Structural Integrator, an ATSI-certified teacher, and a practitioner whose manual therapy career has spanned over 25 years. They are the head teacher and developer for the Manual and Movement-Based Neurovascular Release program, and their neurovascular release work remains strongly grounded in the foundational practices of structural integration. Kier started studying nerves in 2006, added arteries to their special interest list in 2010, and began teaching and developing their own curriculum on neurovascular release in 2013. Since 2020, they have been offering this advanced training online as well as in person to structural integrators, and other manual therapists and movement educators, who want to expand their understanding of structural and functional balance within the body while working through a neurovascular lens.

9:00 - 5:30 on Friday and Saturday, 9:00-5:00 on Sunday

In Person location:

Course Description:
Our focus in this first course in the Manual NVR series will be the neck, head, and upper thorax, including the brachial plexus, shoulder girdle, rib cage, and lungs. We will work gently and precisely with the vascular system to normalize tone in hypertonic muscles that shorten the myofascial tracks, distort posture, and limit movement. We will work with restrictions of the cervical plexus, brachial plexus, intercostal nerves, accessory nerve, vagus nerve, phrenic nerve, and dura, with the goal of reducing pain and improving structural and functional balance. You will also: -learn or refine your ability to use "general listening" and other assessment methods borrowed from osteopathy -use less physical effort -become more efficient -learn new strategies for classic problems -improve your layer palpation and tissue-specific touch -grow your ability to meet the needs of sensitively-tuned individuals -pace your work to provide integration within the session. As you add techniques to your tool bag, we will discuss applications and strategies for working with thoracic outlet syndrome, the residual effects of whiplash, jaw issues, problems leading to anterior head shift, shoulder mobility issues, upper body stiffness, hypermobile clients, and scoliosis.
Over time, your clients will notice improved proprioception, interoception, and nervous system regulation, and they will grow in their appreciation for how smart and adaptive their bodies are. This course is for structural integrators and all licensed manual therapists, including massage therapists and physiotherapists.
